A high-ranking Turkish-Egyptian diplomat commissioned the picture from the realist painter in 1866.
It went to several private collectors before it was found hidden behind a landscape in an antique shop in 1889.
The painting was bought by a Hungarian baron in 1910 and hung in his bathroom in Budapest. At the end of the Second World War, the baron's entire fortune was confiscated by the Soviet troops, and this painting was carried in an open car through the destroyed Budapest.
In the end, the baron could take only one work of art with him to emigration, and he chose this picture.
In 1955, the world-famous psychiatrist Jacques Lacan bought it at an auction for 1.5 million francs.
